Step by step
How online hypnotherapy sessions work
Everything you need to know, from your first call to the support you get between sessions. No technical skill required: if you can join a video call, you can do this.

I've worked online with clients for years now, and I've refined the process so that the technology fades into the background and you can simply relax. Here is exactly what happens.
From booking to aftercare
1. A free consultation
We start with a free 15–30 minute call by phone or video. You tell me what's going on and what you'd like to change, I explain how I'd approach it and roughly how many sessions to expect, and you ask anything you like. There's no pressure to book. Book it here.
2. Booking your session
Once you're ready, we agree a time and you choose Microsoft Teams or Zoom. You'll receive a confirmation by email with your private session link, this checklist, and a request for a phone number I can reach you on during the session as a backup. I may also ask a few background questions before we meet, so we can make the most of our time.
3. Getting ready
On the day, give yourself ten minutes beforehand to set up your room (see below), charge your devices and open the link. If you've never used Teams or Zoom, click the link a day early to make sure it opens. If anything puzzles you, call me and I'll talk you through it.
4. Joining and a quick sound check
Click your link at the session time. You may wait briefly in a virtual lobby until I let you in, so nobody else can join. We spend the first couple of minutes making sure you can hear me clearly through your headphones and that I can see and hear you, and I remind you of the plan if the connection drops.
5. Talking it through
We talk about what you want to achieve and what's been happening. In the first session this conversation is longer, because I want to understand your history and exactly what a good result looks like for you. In later sessions we check in on your progress and decide what to focus on.
6. Hypnosis
You sit back, close your eyes and listen. My voice guides you into a deeply relaxed, focused state, and we do the change work: this might be NLP, regression, rehearsing a calmer response, or building new habits of thought. You stay aware the whole time, and you can speak or open your eyes whenever you want.
7. Coming back and debrief
I bring you gently back to full alertness. We spend a few minutes on what you noticed, and I give you something simple to practise before next time, often a short self-hypnosis or breathing technique. Then you can stay right where you are and enjoy the calm, with no journey home.
8. Between sessions
Practise the techniques we agreed and notice what changes. You're welcome to text or email me a short update on how things are going, and we book the next session when it suits you. Most people find a gap of about a week works well.
| Part | Roughly |
|---|---|
| Joining and sound check | 2–5 minutes |
| Talking it through | 15–20 minutes |
| Hypnosis and change work | 25–30 minutes |
| Coming back and debrief | 5–10 minutes |
First sessions include a fuller conversation, within the same hour.
Teams or Zoom: your choice
I use whichever you're more comfortable with. Both are free for you to use. Each session gets its own private link, and you join through a lobby so only you can come in. You can usually join from a web browser as a guest without creating an account, or use the free app on your computer, tablet or phone.
Your tech checklist
- A device with a camera and microphone: laptop, tablet or phone. A laptop or tablet is easiest for the conversation part.
- Headphones. Strongly recommended. They keep the session private from anyone else in the house, make my voice clear and close, and help you go deeper. Wired is most reliable; if you use Bluetooth, charge them fully first.
- A steady internet connection. Sit near your router if you can, and ask others at home to pause big downloads or streaming.
- Power. Plug your device in, or make sure it's well charged.
- Your phone nearby, on silent but switched on, so I can call you if the video drops.
- Teams or Zoom ready. Open the link beforehand to check it works.
Setting up your room
- Choose a private room where you won't be overheard or interrupted, and close the door.
- Sit in a comfortable chair or on a sofa with your head supported. A recliner is perfect.
- Rest your device on a table or stand, not in your hand, so I can see your head and shoulders.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb and silence other notifications. Keep pets out if they're likely to want attention.
- Have a glass of water nearby, and a blanket if you tend to feel cool when you relax.
- Light the room so your face is visible: a lamp in front of you works better than a bright window behind.
- Join from somewhere you can safely relax, never while driving or on the move.
If the connection drops
It doesn't happen often, but it's good to know exactly what happens if it does. Here's the plan, and I'll remind you of it at the start of every session:
- You simply come back to normal awareness. If my voice stops, you'll drift up and open your eyes, just as you would after a daydream. Nothing unpleasant happens.
- Rejoin the same link. Click it again; I'll be waiting and will let you straight back in.
- If we can't reconnect within about two minutes, I'll phone you on the backup number you gave me. We can carry on by phone or agree to finish by phone.
- If it can't be fixed, we rearrange. If the problem was on my side, the time we lost is rebooked at no charge.
Privacy and recording
- Sessions are not recorded unless we both agree beforehand. Please don't record a session yourself without asking me first.
- Every session has its own private link, and you join through a lobby, so nobody else can drop in.
- I work from a private room with headphones, so no one on my side can hear you.
- Teams and Zoom encrypt the call. Please don't share confidential details in the meeting chat; tell me instead.
- Your notes are confidential and stored securely under UK GDPR. Details are in the privacy policy.
Wherever you are in the world
I work with clients across the UK and abroad. Session times are arranged in UK time, and when you book I'll confirm the time in your local time zone too, so there's no confusion around clock changes. With early morning and evening slots, I can usually find a time that works from Europe, the Middle East, the Americas or Australia and New Zealand.
Fees are in pounds sterling (GBP). If you pay by card from abroad, your bank converts the amount automatically. See fees and prices.
I'm not good with technology. Will that be a problem?
Not at all. If you can open a link in an email, you can join. I'm happy to do a quick test call before your first session, and the first few minutes of every session are a sound check anyway.
Can I use my phone?
Yes. Prop it up on a stand or against something steady, plug it in, and use headphones. A laptop or tablet is a little easier for the talking part simply because the screen is bigger.
What if someone walks in?
Nothing dramatic. You'll naturally become alert, and we'll pick up where we left off. Closing the door and letting people know you're busy for the hour is usually enough.
Do I need to be on camera during the hypnosis?
Yes, please. Seeing you lets me watch how you're responding and adjust what I'm doing, just as I would in the room.
